WHAT IS IT?

Public Defense 103: Trial Skills Workshop (FAST Program Part 3) is a 2 1/2 day trial advocacy program comprised of presentations and on-your-feet small group sessions including pretrial motions, entering evidence, making objections, and cross-examination including impeachment.  Participants will perform in a series of practical workshops to incorporate what they learned from the presentations in exercises simulating discrete phases of a trial.  Case materials for the exercises will be provided for the participants before the conference.

Hotel Accommodations:

Where are we staying?  We will be staying at the Springhill Suites downtown near the courthouse.  (See map below.)

Hotel Parking:  Hotel Self-Parking is in the South Spring Street Garage across the street from the hotel.  The cost is $7.00/day and IS NOT included with the room, so you will need to seek reimbursement pursuant to your regular office policies.  The hotel also offers valet parking for $25.00/day.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS - Checkout Wednesday:  We will need to check out of the hotel Wednesday morning.  If you don't feel comfortable leaving your luggage in your room, you can ask the hotel to hold your luggage.

COMMUTER PARKING:

For those of you who will be commuting, unfortunately, the courthouse does not have all-day parking.  The best place to park will be the Commons Garage at 60 Beattie Place, Greenville, SC, which is adjacent to the Hyatt Hotel and across the street from the Courthouse.  Click the link for address and rates: https://greenvillesc.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Commons-Garage-29

LUNCH:  Lunch will be on-your-own.  If you're not familiar with downtown Greenville, here is a non-exhaustive list of lunch options in downtown Greenville.

MONDAY EVENING SOCIAL:  Carolina Ale House Logo Social Gathering Monday evening from 6 – 8 pm at Carolina Ale House 113 South Main Street.  SCCID will provide the food.  Cash bar.

Well, that all sounds like fun, but what about the Workshop?

REGISTRANT INFORMATION - WELCOME TO PD103!

MATERIALS AND ADVANCE PREPARATION:

You will receive a printed workbook when you sign in on Wednesday, but you need to review the materials linked on the private page and do some preparation in advance.

Also, please review Bob Dudek’s Record Preservation Demonstration Outlines.  The outlines will not only help you understand the demonstrations, but they will also allow us to proceed without a lot of setup explanation during the presentation.  Bob will have a brief refresher on error preservation, but for a full refresher course you can view his presentation from PD101 here:

LOGISTICS:

WHERE TO GO MONDAY:  See the map below for walking directions to the Court House.  Monday morning, registration is from 8:30 – 8:45 a.m.  Enter through the main courthouse entrance.  When you go through security, you should see the Jury Assembly Room to your right.  That’s where we’ll be for most of our full-group sessions.  We will also be using the jury assembly room break room for our break room.

DRESS CODE:  Office casual is fine.  No need to dress up like you’re going to trial unless that is your idea of casual or you really just want to.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES:  If you will be absent or late at any point during PD103, please call or text Lawrence Brown (803-270-7657) to let him know you haven’t been abducted by aliens.  If you just don’t show up, we will have to track you down.
